What to wear is a frequent question in our lives and its a very important one for a portrait session aka photo shoot. The colors and patterns in an image add to the whole story since its a still frame and your eye analyzes everything in it. If not chosen intentionally the outfits can take the viewer's attention away from it as they may not be in harmony with the background or the feel you want to convey.
So here are some of my suggestions which work for me irrespective of age or gender of the person.
1. Choose Solids
When you cannot decide what to wear, start with solid colors ... it may be a top or bottom piece or the whole outfit for example a dress or choosing the same color for both, the top and the bottom. The best part is everyone has these pieces in their wardrobes ... no wonder these are called wardrobe staples. If you decide a color for bottom or top you can go next to the complimentary color or a neutral color to pair it with.
2.Add Texture
Texture adds the X factor to the outfit. Natural textures are comfortable and pleasing to the eye as well. Examples are a cross stitched beanie, an embossed fabric or frills in a dress. Denim also qualifies in the texture category or you can have a ripped denim to add even more.
3. Go for Classic patterns
Some patterns are called classic for a reason as they never go out of style and therefore won't date your "image". Patterns like stripes, plaid and polka dots have been here for ages and still work well in every scenario.
But like all rules these can be broken too with what appeals to You!
